The Birth of a Nymph
Project type
Linoleum Press
Date
2025
Location
Imperial, MO
One of the projects I created during my Printmaking Concepts and Techniques course for the 2025 semester was a linoleum cut press, and since this project was involved with the experimentation of color layering, I imagined a nymph disguised with flowers of numerous hues to behave as a part of nature.
I researched images of side profiles of women with long hair while I also observed photographs of flowers in which my father grew, such as hibiscus, flags, sunflowers, daisies, begonias and tiger lilies. During the process, the first color of ink I added was yellow for the background, the second color was magenta for the flowers, the third color was green for the leaves, while I also added a translucent white layer for highlighting in some of the areas. After all of the layers of ink I added to the design of the nymph, I began imagining that she is growing out of the ground similarly to a seedling and she is looking at the world around her for the first time, hence the reason why I decided to name the piece The Birth of a Nymph.
