Riding Voreio Through the Night Sky
Project type
Oil Pastel
Date
2023
Location

When I would be traveling on the highway, I would look up at the clouds and imagined a lynx whose fur is forged out of the abundantly colored patterns of the Aurora Borealis who runs across the sky and hops from one cloud to the next, so I decided to try and bring this lynx to life for my final project of my Drawing II course. I wanted to design this lynx in a darkened environment so his fur patterns could create a luminous glow among the clouds, which is why I used oil pastels to try and establish a glimmering color effect. Moreover, I wanted to emanate the emotion of being in contact with this creature as well as the sensation of riding this lynx, so I decided to include the woman riding on his back so viewers could try and envisage the excitement she feels while riding the fictional animal. I asked my brother what the name of the lynx should be and that was the occasion when we discovered the term Voreio Selas, the Greek term for the Aurora Borealis, which was when we selected the title of Riding Voreio through the Night Sky.
