Nature's Appetite

Project type

Oil Pastel

Date

2023

Location

Imperial, MO

The drawing of Nature’s Appetite was created during my Drawing II course of the Spring 2023 semester at Jefferson College. The assignment this piece was involved in included the experimentation of unusual colors to portray the contrasting aspects of a composition, such as mixing blue or red into the shadows of a banana or incorporating green and violet into the fur of a jaguar’s rosette patterns. Some of- the design features that I included were mixing red and violet to create the shadow of a Granny smith apple to the left of the image while also designing the apple on the other side of the image while also hiding tinted blue into the shadows of the green grapes next to the skull. After observing the collection of colors in the image along with the prominent inclusion of food materials and the skull of an animal, I began to imagine how robust an animal’s taste could possibly be and how it is contradictory to a human’s taste.
