The 2023 watercolor painting of Mr. Binx Reposing on the Hill was based upon a photograph that I took of my neighbor’s cat, Mr. Binx, lying next to an evergreen tree at the top of the hill in my backyard. I felt compelled to take a photograph because of the arrangement of all the subjects within the view, such as the bird feeder at the top of the hill, the yellow flag flowers in front of me, my house hiding behind the hill and Mr. Binx basking next to the tree a few feet away. After taking this photograph, I decided to create a painting out of it because I was hoping to depict the tranquility the cat felt while resting on the hill listening to the birds around him. The sun was also descending, which was another feature I was hoping to include to portray the serenity Mr. Binx felt because I am wondering if other viewers could imagine the ataraxia a cat would usually feel while being in a calm state.
