It Takes What it Wants and Doesn't Give Back

Project type

Gouache and Watercolor on Mixed Media Paper

Date

October 2025

Location

Imperial, MO

I created the painting of It Takes What it Wants and Doesn't Give Back to try to imagine if the neurodegenerative sickness of dementia was a creature in which could not be perceived by the naked eye. Ever since my grandmother became diagnosed with dementia, her mind as well as her aura appeared to have been consumed by something none of my family and I could see, as if something was meandering right behind her and sucking her life away, comparably to a mosquito. For one of my projects in my Narrative Figure Drawing course, I was hoping to design the creature typifying dementia as a floating colossal parasite whose tentacles expand across millions of miles to try and select any victims who catch its attention and suck the energy out of their bodies to feed itself and become indomitable. I do hope that one day, a remedy for dementia can be developed so that this malevolent creature can be stopped so it can no longer take advantage of the lives of people.
